2020 has been an intense year for everyone. From the pandemic to the election, and all of the craziness in between, it has become a common joke that people gained weight during quarantine. Covid weight gain jokes are all over meme accounts and Twitter! We've all heard of the "Freshman 15" after starting college, but 2020 has brought us the "Quarantine 15."
And let's not forget all of the parents stuck homeschooling their children who have "jokingly" turned to hitting the booze by 10am!
In addition to the normal stress of our everyday lives, the current 2020 election has been causing its fair share of stress eating and drinking, too. According to Google Trends, searches for comfort food have spiked!
And American's aren't just turning to comfort FOOD... they're searching for comfort BOOZE, too.
The search phrase "Liquor store near me" is now at an all time high!
Experts are worried about this stress and it's toll on individuals.
“I've never seen in all my yeas practicing, which is about 40, I've never seen anything like this in my life,” Dr. Harris Stratyner, a clinical professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, said. Stratyner is an addiction specialist, and he fears the that the results from the election could be triggering for many.
“They're self-medicating, not just with alcohol. They are self-medicating with drugs. They are self-medicating by taking an extra Valium,” he explained.
So, how about you? How are you holding up? Has the election caused you to drink & eat more?
