Most of us love iced coffee…what's not to like? It’s the perfect pick-me-up on a hot summer day and it can also serve as a sweet treat for when you're craving dessert. The only thing we don't love about it is the watered down taste it gets when the ice melts.
There’s an obvious solution when we’re making it at home: coffee ice cubes. But, what about when we’re out and about and craving our coffee fix from Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts? Well, according to Brand Eating, this is being taken into consideration among the coffee-selling brands. For starters, Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme have started using not only coffee flavored ice cubes in their cold drinks, but other flavors as well!
So far, Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme have implemented the flavored cubes only in South Korea (lucky for them!), but we are hoping it proves enough of a success that we may be able to see it here too. Brand Eating reports that Starbucks has been thinking about the idea since 2008, but doesn’t have stores with freezer units. I sure hope they figure it out. Imagine ordering a pumpkin spice latte (which is back, by the way!) iced with pumpkin spice ice cubes. I mean, it’s still pretty hot out there, right?
Delish reports that the two coffee giants have a couple of flavors in common, like coffee and milk chocolate, and both have a fruit flavor for non-coffee drinkers as well.
Dunkin’ Donuts offers a “cube beverage” line that consists of caramel macchiato with coffee cubes, milk chocolate cubes, and a Red Orange Aid cube drink. Krispy Kreme’s offers include: milk cubes for a caramel macchiato, latte cubes, original coffee cubes, and a sparkling lime flavor for their drink of the same name. After all, not everybody drinks coffee.
Starbucks has yet to catch on, even in South Korea. At least we know the idea is floating around in their heads. I’m sure if it proves to be a success with the competition, they’ll step up their game. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking. Either way, these are some great homemade ice cube ideas for the meantime.
