Retailers, like Costco are anticipating meat shortages sooner than expected, so this Monday Costco became one of the most recent retailers to implement purchasing limits on their fresh meat due to processing plants slowing down during this time.
Costco announced to it's members that they will be limiting members to three items of beef, pork, and poultry to "help ensure more members are able to purchase merchandise they want and need." Additionally Kroger, the country's largest supermarket chain announced a similar rule the prior week. These limits are in place due to the high demand from shoppers, while production facilities and meat supplies are temporarily closing their factories due to workers catching the virus.

The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union estimated that the prior week, 20 meatpacking and food processing workers passed away. The union mentioned that the closures have resulted in a 25% reduction in pork slaughter capacity and a 10% reduction in beef.
