Cheese aficionados, listen up: there's a new variety of your favorite kind of dairy that has hit the market, and it is extremely rare.
Great Big Story has posted a new video on its YouTube channel about the world's sole producer of a very special kind of cheese -- donkey cheese, that is.
"We're all familiar with goat cheeses and cow's milk cheeses, but what about cheese from donkey milk?" reads the YouTube video description. "At the Zasavica Special Nature Reserve in Serbia, Slobodan Simic creates the world's most expensive cheese with milk from his herd of donkeys. Donkeys only produce a tiny amount of milk, so that -- coupled with the fact that Slobodan is the only one with the recipe -- means that his cheese goes for around $500 dollars per pound."
Simic's special recipe works around the fact that donkey's milk doesn't actually contain enough casein in it to coagulate, like goat's milk, cow's milk, and sheep milk does, so his ability to actually make an edible and tasty product is actually quite impressive.
"It's a very long process which includes certain secrets and the solving of certain problems that other people have not been able to solve," he states in the video.
While some people are surely lining out the doors to sample the expensive and involved variety of cheese, others YouTubers were quick to remind the general public that just because something has a high price point, that doesn't necessarily mean it's worth the dough.
"And the most expensive coffee in the world involves cat poop," one YouTuber commented.
