Dunkin' Donuts is trying a pumpkin flavor shot as part of their unsweetened flavor shots line.
As popular as the Starbucks PSL staple is, many find it to be too sweet, with some people even saying they only need one or two a season. Dunkin’ introduced its own Pumpkin Spice Latte a few years back, and it was applauded for being a little less sweet. This year, they’re expanding on this by using no sugar at all.
In case you hadn’t heard, the donut giant has already introduced an array of unsweetened flavor shots for the sugar-conscious coffee lover, including Blueberry, Caramel, Cinnamon, Coconut, French Vanilla, Hazelnut, Raspberry and Toasted Almond. According to Dunkin’ Donuts, you can mix and match these flavors to get a delicious drink that’s all your own, and now they’ll be testing a pumpkin option as well.
Trendhunter reports that Dunkin’ Donuts will be testing the new flavor in Baltimore, Providence, Rhode Island, and Washington, D.C. (hooray, I’ll get to try it!). If all goes well, they’ll consider offering it everywhere else too.
According to Brand Eating, the pumpkin flavor won’t only be offered in an unsweetened flavor shot, but also as a sweetened flavor swirl to be added to frozen drinks as well. I wonder if Starbucks will follow suit and try offering a less sweet version of the drink that it introduced to the market in the first place.
The pumpkin spice latte is so popular that soon it might not be known just as a Starbucks drink, but as a fall drink offered by everyone. I guess this means it’s time for these guys to up their game.
Personally, I’m eager to sit back and let the competitions begin. McDonald’s? Krispy Kreme? Anyone else want to jump in on the fall drink testing? I know McDonald’s has a PSL that was released in August this year, but I’ve also heard that it’s pretty sweet too. It will be nice to see how different chains can perfect the recipe over time.
