Wegmans has been ranked the number one grocery store in America, putting an end to the four-year streak held by Trader Joe’s.
A regional grocery store that many of us have never visited, Wegmans was founded in 1916 by brothers Walter and John Wegman. After a century, the chain is still family-owned with Colleen Wegman serving as president and her father, Danny Wegman, working as the company’s CEO.
Although Wegmans did not obtain enough votes to earn a spot on the Market Force Information’s annual survey last year, the chain doubled its support, as reported by Yahoo. Its 76 percent satisfaction score put it at the top of the list, followed by Publix and Trader Joe’s. Since its number one score in 2015, Trader Joe's has seen its customer satisfaction score fall five percent.
Wegmans stores are larger than a typical supermarket and have a greater emphasis on fresh products and a diverse inventory. The chain’s largest stores tend to stock between 50,000 and 70,000 items, versus the approximately 40,000 products that average supermarkets have at their disposal.
The grocery chain also boasts spacious aisles, an extensive beer selection, dedicated customer service, and numerous stores have pizzerias, buffets, sushi bars, cafes, and seating areas for 100 to 300 customers.
"Its focus on employee training to ensure customers have the best experience has been a winning strategy that creates superfans eager for a new location to open near their home," Market Force said of the brand.
