A bartender in Nebraska said she was shocked when a truck driver left a $1,000 tip after closing his $89.72 tab.

Kari Anthony is a bartender at Quaker Steak and Lube in Grand Island. While working the evening shift last Thursday, she engaged in conversation with one of the customers.

“He was paying as he went and I let him know that he didn’t have to cash out every single time, and if he wanted he could put everything on a tab and cash him out at the end,” Anthony told the Grand Island Independent.

The man was a truck driver who had just finished his shift, Anthony said. He had a few people around him and paid for their meals and drinks as well.

But when it came time to pay his bill, Anthony couldn’t believe the amount the truck driver tipped her. She said most truck drivers left tips of $2 to $5, but this man left $1,000.

“I was really nervous and shocked,” Anthony said.

Anthony told the man she appreciated it greatly, but that he didn’t have to do that. She even got her shift manager to come out and speak with the man, but the generous truck driver insisted.

After 10 minutes of talking with the man, the shift manager told Anthony that he was “dead serious and insisted on wanting to leave the tip.”

Anthony and the truck driver reportedly related to one another in more than a few ways. She told him about being a single mom with three kids and her upbringing in Tennessee.

The truck driver told Anthony he had some “ex-wives that live down in Tennessee,” and started talking about his own mother. They spoke about how important family was and what brought Anthony to Nebraska.

The man told Anthony to use some of the money to do something good for her kids. She listened and took them to the Nebraska State Fair on Sunday.

“They got to go to the fair and play games and all the other stuff,” Anthony said. “Normally, because of situations, I would have not been able to do that. But I was able to because of that gentlemen. I am just extremely grateful.”
