Generally, at a New York Deli and convenience store, you would expect to find a sandwich, a soda, or even a chocolate bar if you are looking to satisfy your midnight munchies.
However, at Lucky Candy in the Bronx, you can thank the easily recognizable cashier Ahmed Alwan, a 20-year-old college student, for a unique experience. And you'd think people know him because of his infectious smile and energy, but in fact, Alwan's fame is owed to his quirky idea of playing a game with his shoppers. He started doing it for two weeks, and it has already gone viral.
The rules of the game are simple, try to solve a math equation, and if you do it, then you won't have to pay for anything you can grab within 5 seconds from the store shelves. Well, almost anything, you don't have a chance at his cat.
Talking with CNN, Alwan said, "All I wanted to do was to help people. But I wanted to make it fun. So I made a TikTok and chose a challenge, asking them a math question. It's a way to entertain and educate people in need while putting a smile on their face, too."
With more than 300,000 followers on TikTok and 17,000 Instagram followers, Alwan has officially become an internet sensation. The videos show Alwan asking simple maths questions like "What's 5 times 5?" or "9 times 9 minus 5?"
The ones who answer correctly pay $0 and get 5 seconds to pick up anything from chips to ice creams to speakers.
A tradition of giving back
Even though Alwan pays for everything in the store, he believes in more than just earning money. Our good-hearted samaritan wants to help the member of the community with low-income who need to save money for rent and utilities.
While talking to CNN, his proud father, Saleh Aobad, an immigrant from Yemen, said, "It's great to see him do good and help out the community, and most importantly represent Islam. It's impacting the business in a positive way, bringing awareness and attention to the store as well as spreading positivity throughout the community."
Alwan treats strangers and familiar folks equally, giving everyone a fair shot at the game.
However, Alwan, a student of Bronx Community College and soon to become a pharmacist, has always been charitable. Be it with helping customers out with giving them items on credit or offering free coffee and muffins to homeless people, Alwan does it all.
However, if you look closely, his heartwarming and funny videos show that he isn't just offering free chips and cookies, in fact he is spreading love and building a relationship with the community as he mentioned in his own words as well.
Alwan is not planning on stopping anytime soon; infact, he says in the future videos, the questions would be more creative. He has even started a GoFundMe and said "The money will be going towards products and food that would be used for the challenges and even simple donations for customers in need,"
