In an attempt to increase the amount of healthy options available to their customers, McDonald’s is testing out chicken sausage patties as an option for signature Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwiches.
Throughout the past few years, McDonald’s has been experimenting with healthier menu items. In summer 2015, kale was added to McDonald’s salad mix, which consists of Romaine lettuce, baby kale, and baby spinach. In February 2016, Chobani Greek yogurt was incorporated into McDonald’s menus throughout Southern California in McCafe smoothies and McDonald’s Fruit ‘N Yogurt Parfaits. Numerous restaurants in California were also able to partake of breakfast bowls, one of which included turkey sausage and egg whites.
In 2013, the fast-food chain started offering egg whites to enjoy with breakfast throughout most of its U.S. locations, and in recent months, chicken patties have also been slowly integrated into the breakfast menus of several McDonald’s restaurants.
According to Brand Eating, these patties have been seen in McDonald’s locations throughout New England and upstate New York as early as February 2016. Currently in the testing phase, the chicken sausage patties will be offered as a healthier option to typical pork sausage. Currently, the options are ham, bacon, and pork sausage.
Hopefully we’ll soon see chicken patties at McDonald’s across the country and be able to enjoy a guilt-free Egg McMuffin!
