Candy lovers can look forward to a nostalgic sweet treat the next time they’re on a drugstore run this summer! The Spangler Candy Company has brought back Necco Wafers, The Original Candy Wafer. The eight flavors making a comeback in their classic wax paper rolls include lemon, lime, orange, clove, cinnamon, wintergreen, licorice, and chocolate.
Spangler developed the returning flavors to match their original recipes. But the company updated the chocolate wafer to have a slightly richer cocoa flavor. "Just when comfort food is experiencing a resurgence, Necco Wafers is back with that very kind of familiar, comfortable feeling we all seem to be craving," Kirk Vashaw, CEO of Spangler Candy Company said in a release.

The New England Confectionery Company first debuted Necco Wafers in 1847, making it one of the oldest candy brands ever. The candy found its place throughout American history. Civil War soldiers, World War II troops, and Arctic explorers trekking through the North and South Poles all enjoyed Necco Wafers.
The candy’s portability and unmeltable quality made them fit for pockets around the world. In 2018, New England Confectionery Company filed for bankruptcy, ending its era as one of the oldest continuously running candy companies in America. Spangler bought Necco Wafers that year and added it to the company’s line of classic candy offerings.
This includes Dum Dum lollipops and Sweethearts. Major drugstores will start carrying Necco Wafers in June. Bigger retailers, including Kroger, Cracker Barrel, and Wegmans, will have them in stores by July. A complete list of retailers carrying them is available on Spangler’s website.
