What exactly is a slinger? We like to imagine that it’s like a burger slider, only instead of being slid down a diner bar it’s flung into your mouth with a giant slingshot. To bring the year to a close and welcome 2021, SONIC is bringing back its Chicken Slingers, little sandwiches crafted simply out of a seasoned, fried all-white meat chicken breast, mayo and salty pickles, and a buttery brioche bun, engineered to create, as Scott Uehlein, SONIC’s V.P. of product innovation and development states, “an irresistible, crispy bite.” First spotted at Kansas SONIC locations in late 2019 then released for a limited time nationwide earlier in June of this year, SONIC’s Chicken Slingers come in two varieties, original and spicy, the latter of which comes with SONIC’s Spicy Ranch sauce. Brilliant.
We all remember the chicken sandwich war of last year between Chick-Fil-A and Popeyes, and indeed, the fried chicken sandwich is a staple of fast food joints that fans use to gauge their favorites. SONIC comes in with its own twist by offering all the flavor of the classic chicken-sauce-pickles combo and punching all that flavor into a petite package. At just 350 calories, it's enough to satisfy a craving with a little less guilt. Or enough to rationalize getting two. When I went to go try the original Chicken Slinger. I unwrapped the package to find the sandwich piping-hot, perfect for the colder weather. I then promptly ate it whilst forgetting to take pictures for this article. Then contemplated getting another. For the pictures, of course. These cute little sandwiches will be available until January 31st at just $2.49 at participating SONIC locations.
