Starbucks is bringing back the Birthday Cake Frappuccino to celebrate a very special occasion.

In 1995, Starbucks debuted the Frappuccino for the first time throughout the United States and Canada. Time flies, doesn't it? Back in the day, there were only two flavors, Coffee and Mocha. No whipped cream. No green straw even.

"The first week of launch we were tracking sales, and it was something like 200,000 drinks the first week – when we were hoping for 100,000," said Dan Moore, who worked with the operations team at Starbucks headquarters at the time. "The next week it was 400,000 and the next it was 800,000. We had figured it would do well in Southern California – but it sold just as well in Chicago, Vancouver B.C. and Boston. It was huge."

This new beverage was an all-around success, as it brought customers who were not coffee drinkers into the store and offered an appealing option during warm weather.

"When you think about it, 20 years ago, the business, Starbucks hadn’t launched into a whole host of warm weather markets," said Dina Campion, a longtime employee who is now part of Starbucks Digital Team. "We were reliant on the holiday season. With Frappuccino, we were able to level out the dips in store traffic in the summer."

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the beloved beverage, the Birthday Cake Frappuccino will be available in participating stores in the United States and Canada from April 28 to May 2.

The drink consists of a blend of the vanilla bean Frappuccino with hazelnut syrup topped with raspberry-infused pink whipped cream. According to Starbucks Secret Menu, the pink whipped cream is only used for special occasions, so take advantage of it while it’s still in stores!

Although the Birthday Cake Frappuccino is only available for a limited time, if you tell your barista you would like a Vanilla Bean Frappuccino with hazelnut syrup, you can enjoy this beverage all year long.
