I’m not going around shouting this from the rooftops or anything, but I will begrudgingly admit that when it comes to food trends, I can see the appeal in most of the content that goes viral.
Did I personally wait in an hour-plus long line just to taste a rainbow bagel? No; but I was kinda jealous of my friend who did. Do I Instagram my Sunday brunches so the world can see that I, too, like Bloody Mary’s? No, but my typical order is now avocado toast whenever it’s offered, and it’s probably not just because of a personal whim. Food media is influential, and food trends are fun.
But I will never understand this dang Carolina Reaper obsession.
If you haven’t seen any of the videos currently exploding over the internet right now, let me fill you in: the Carolina Reaper Pepper is the Guinness Book of World Records holder for Hottest Chili Pepper on Earth. Lately, lots of people have come up with the wise idea to record themselves tasting the peppers for our entertainment, and let me just say: the results have not been pretty.
If for some reason you feel like having a taste of the pepper is a good idea, you may now purchase Paqui chips’ latest offering: the Carolina Reaper Madness chip. Behold:
What’s that, you ask? A coffin-shaped box filled with one lone chip?
Why yes. The Carolina Reader Madness chip is literally one incredibly spicy chip in a coffin-shaped box.
"We're always looking to push the limits to find fun ways for our fans and consumers to engage with us," Jeff Day, Brand Manager for Paqui Chips, told Mashable. "When we decided that we wanted to make the world's hottest chip, we first said, well, we need to find the world's hottest pepper.
"The reason that we're selling this as one chip is because quite honestly, that's all that you need. That's all that anyone needs," Day added. "It's the hottest chip you'll ever have, I can guarantee you that. After you eat that one chip, trust me, you're not looking to dig back into the bag and have a second one. So, one chip is what we created to have the experience.”
If you want to try your hand at handling the spice, the single, limited-edition Carolina Reaper chip retails for $4.99 at paqui.com/reaper beginning in late September, and will be available at select stores nationwide beginning Oct. 1, while supplies lasts.
