There's just something about rainbows. First, they swept through (and temporarily conquered, according to Gothamist) Brooklyn in the form of the bagel; next, they reappeared as unicorn bark all over Pinterest. Of course, when my dog ate a box of crayons and defecated the rainbow fifteen years ago, nobody seemed especially impressed — but something about the new Rainbow Grilled Cheese in Hong Kong has the entire internet salivating over social media's newest neon darling.
The novelty sandwich, which can be ordered from the Hong Kong restaurant KALA Toast, appeared on Instagram via user hkfoodiexblogger, and the photo quickly followed in the footsteps of its rainbow culinary predecessors — it went viral.
According to hkfoodiexblogger, the various colors within the sandwich actually have their own distinct flavor profiles. The colored cheeses include "lavender (blue), basil (green), tomato (red) and the yellow one is actually the combination of four kinds of cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, emmental and gruyere)," she writes.
Clocking in at 42 Hong Kong Dollars (the equivalent of approximately $5 in America), the radiant sandwich probably isn't the right lunchtime choice if you’re looking to indulge in haute cuisine. But, notes hkfoodiexblogger, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deliver in other areas of enjoyment.
"I would say the quality was rather average," her review continues, "but we all cannot deny that it is photogenic."
We can’t argue with that.
