Ingredients

Picture yourself in the summer — in Italy — finishing up a fresh, light dinner with the sun still out but slowly sinking. To cap off the meal, and give yourself that extra boost of energy to continue your night, you do as the Italians do: order a gelato affogato (a scoop of creamy gelato drowned in an espresso shot).

Sound good? Starbucks seems to think so — and the coffee giant wants to bring the affogato experience stateside and up, because starting July 7, customers at Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada will be able to order Affogato-style Frappuccinos.

“We start with a shot of our smooth signature Espresso Roast known for its rich flavor and caramelly sweetness,” said Ryan Coombes from the Starbucks beverage development team. “When you pour the espresso over the Frappuccino, it creates a beautiful marbling finish.”

Apparently, when the barista pours the shot of espresso over the finished frap, the hot espresso combines with the cool base, creating creamy, sweet pockets of coffee throughout the beverage.

The Affogato-style Frappuccinos are available in three classic flavors: Vanilla Bean, Caramel, and Mocha, although the press release reminds us all that technically, any frappuccino can be affogato’d — you just have to ask.
